Week Eight and Nine

Week eight was one of my favorite projects I did this year thus far. Unlike a lot of people, I have always enjoyed Valentine's Day and what is represents (with or without a "special" someone). This holiday provides a unique opportunity to do something for someone else and to let them know you care. It can either be a significant other, a parent, or a friend and the list goes on and on... In my opinion, you could use this day selfishly (to either indulge, or self loathe) or you could take the focus off of yourself and do something nice for someone else.

With this new opportunity at hand, I asked myself who would have a really difficult time during this day? I immediately thought of the widows. I can't imagine what a sense of emptiness I would feel if I no longer had Kyle to celebrate with me on this day, especially in death. So, Kyle, Carlee, and I decided to dedicate half of the day to bring flowers, prayer, and care to those who may need a little pick me up on this day.  The Bible also does not take lightly the topic of widows and orphans, "The LORD watches over the strangers; He relieves the fatherless and widow." (Psalms 146:9) For a Christian, it is not a suggestion, but a command to take part in this task.

In the end, this was truly one of the most rewarding Valentine's Day I have ever had! These special women had so much to be sad about, but how refreshing to witness such joy despite of what could have been despair. This, my friends, is Christianity in its finest! Christ came to defeat death that we might live in freedom with Him. Not that it eliminates pain, but that it brings a promise that we are never alone. These women represented that for me.

For week nine, I dedicated myself in prayer and presence to another special lady in my life, my grandmother. Last Sunday, she became very ill and was taken to the hospital, almost unresponsive with 107 degree temperature. It was difficult to see such a strong person at near death's door. However, doctor's were able to bring down her temperature and regulate her blood pressure. They were later able to move her out of the ICU and determined that the cause of her acute illness was Ecoli.

Although my grandmother is feeling better, she is still in the hospital and in need of prayers. Ecoli was just a symptom of a much larger problem and there are doctors working around the clock to determine the central diagnosis. If you get a chance, please remember her in your prayers. She still has a long way to go and will need a lot of encouragement and strength to endure what could be a long journey for her. They will be much appreciated!!
